Focus is contextual, not a single sharpness number

A system can estimate edge detail, local contrast, subject clarity, face or eye cues, and motion blur. Those signals still need context. A sharp background does not rescue a portrait with missed subject focus, while intentional motion can be central to a successful frame.

Review focus at the size relevant to delivery. A small web image and a large print impose different practical standards, and automated scores should not be treated as laboratory measurements.

Composition combines geometry and meaning

Automated review can reason about subject placement, balance, visual separation, edges, dominant shapes, and competing elements. None of these is a universal rule. Centered framing, negative space, or deliberate imbalance may be exactly right for the brief.

A burst should be judged as a group

If an image is important for story coverage, compare it with its sequence even when another frame has a higher technical score.

Use confidence as a prompt to inspect

Do not interpret a rank as a guarantee of quality. Check low-ranked must-have moments and high-ranked frames with difficult lighting, unusual composition, intentional blur, or subtle expressions.

A sound workflow records overrides. Your corrections are part of the edit, not errors to hide. The final selection remains a photographic and client-facing decision.
